Day 4 Deep in the Weeds

Two major things to capture then a discussion of Day 4 topics and courseflow.
1) Maybe the process of going from the 'big ideas' project outline to project sketch isn't seamless. Brian had some good thoughts about the differences between and transition from concept to topic (and I'd add, to task). Look at that process.
2) Maybe looking at ccg's (common curriculum goals, Oregon's way of presenting content standards) can be limiting rather than guiding. Example are those expressed in the area Jami… Continue

Looking at Big Ideas, del.icio.us, trouble in wikitown

K-W-L
We started the day with Know-Wonder-Learn on the topic of stamps. Hilarious that I asked people if they use this instr. method and --eek, really?-- no one? But then someone (probably Susan, she and I are the same vintage I think) says K-W-L. Oh yeah, we all use THAT. :) We talked briefly how it does/doesn't work and talked about how kids brains had been massaged prior to the task so it may go better. We also teamed and did a little pre-thinking so slow twitch/fast twitch kids get ev… Continue

Day 2 and Cooking

Absent: Deirdre
Don't want to jinx things, but something must be going right because two new students joined today at the urging of their colleagues. Welcome to Jamie (Crista's teaching partner) and Peggy (a colleague of Brian's and Aimee's).
What a thoughtful bunch. I think I'll be saying this a lot. We got literally half way through the agenda today so lots of adjusting ahead but the easy flow, healthy exchange of ideas, and extra time in the Ning were worth it. We have to get back to del.icio… Continue

Wherein I Capture My Class Experience

I've wanted to teach a course like this for a long time and we've finally begun! I plan to blog regularly to generally capture the experience as it unfolds, and to reflect on several key questions: 1) In what ways did today's class help people move closer to the ideal manifestation of pbl? (badly worded, will work on this but I kind of know what I mean). 2) How would today's session and assignments hold up or need to be modified for delivery in an online course?

Thanks for letting me join. I'm developing a course on project-based learning with multimedia that's going to use your book as the text, so I'm hoping to find some inspiration for activities. I did see that the site wasn't currently active, but I think just browsing the past discussions will be helpful for me.

Hi Jane! If you have time before Wednesday's Lab can you take a look at my project plan? I am feeling like I need a little guidance. Thanks!

In search of the why teach regions question I found some great projects through National Geographic. I read a few articles about why geography is important and why kids should know about their country. This got me excited! I found a project about migration which could lead to many possible projects in my classroom. I'm going to do some more exploring on this topic. And, it fits into 5th grade state standards!

I set up an account with google, but I can't figure out how to get the doc. up?

I just found your question. I guess I'm not much of a social networker. My salamander is called a northwestern. They live in the same habitat as the rough skinned, only they live primarily on land and are nocturnal. It’s been difficult to keep them alive this summer, I think primarily due to the heat and a lack of good food sources. Thanks for your interest, Deirdre

Hi Jane,
I'm trying to get in some practice on leaving messages on blogs etc. I'm trying to figure out how to add pics or other things to my page so here's hoping I don't mess it up. I am enjoying the class thanks for letting me in late.

Why yes, it is the Grand Canyon! What an amazing, beautiful place. I found this perfect place to rest after a long day of hiking. It made for a fun photo as well!

Well, this canoe photo was the last of the last . . . as I finally donated the ol' 50-year-old family canoe to St. Vinny's. It has little aluminum left on its bottom with its ribs showing through on the bottom side. The clincher was the water that had leaked into the not-so-airtight front airchamber. C'est la vie for the green canoe once inscribed by my dad with "Minnesota Department of ConVersation" on its bow. And it's now time to finally move on to kayaks.

Thanks for the watershed link. I am excited to get involved in the project. I can't believe I knew nothing about it until yesterday. Good thing I am taking your course. I have already learned so much and we have only had one class.
